I was reminded today from a post by twelvety that we did in fact, back in the days of photo printing from film, use a little bit of nose grease on our negatives to take out scratches before we printed the images in an enlarger. Just rub your finger alongside the bridge of your nose, then wipe it right on the scratch...
Like a bridge over troubled water —Simon & Garfunkel Yay, a novel written in the first person! Yeah, yeah, present tense which isn’t wholly my jam but compared to the limited third person that’s been every single book for the past hundred years this is a every welcome breath of fresh air. I’ve read a couple of...
Jahsalyn Robinson paints a mural of Maureen Wood in Northside — a community activist that transformed lives and the neighborhood.
One of my favorite videos I watched recently was by Pewdiepie, and while the title is “help, Im going through a midlife crisis…”, you realize about 3/4 of the way through that it was just bait. The real topic of the video is minimalism, and a great story about the philosopher Diogenes and his bowl. Diogenes was...
This scene is mesmerising, especially when I am here watching it from window seat with my own eyes. It feels very similar to my imagination of being in a cold desert such as in Antartica. The clouds beneath are giving an illusion of a land extended till horizon and fully covered with ice. Try to look, may be you can...
Alpine Linux: The Alpine Linux Technical Steering Committee (TSC) has decided to change the base filesystem hierarchy. In the future, /lib, /bin, and /sbin will be symbolic links to their /usr counterparts, and every package shall be installed under the /usr paths. For now, /usr/bin and /usr/sbin will continue to be...
Half motion-sick, I stumbled off the coach. To my left, a glittering flow of cars three lanes strong whooshes past. Looks like a lot of people still have somewhere to be tonight. Not me, though. Stepping back into my childhood home, it felt strange... to not to feel strange. I was only away for about two months...
Although it has only been about a week since the last Wait Wait Stats Update blog post, there have been a couple of updates to the project and to the production instances of the Wait Wait Stats sites.
Born 100 years ago today was the artist and broadcaster Tony Hart. When he died back in 2009, I wrote a bit about him on this blog – 'A talented, inventive and exceptionally deft artist, capable of working fast on a large or small scale, he presented children's art programmes that were genuinely inspiring....
Back in the dark ages (the 1990s), I was an inveterate operating system switcher. At various points, I ran DR-DOS with DESQView/X (what Windows 3.1 should have been), FreeBSD, several distributions of Linux, Windows 2000, QNX Photon, and BeOS. With the exception of QNX, I didn’t just run them, I used them. Used...
God be thanked: For his mercy and kindness shown in so many ways in my life -- in all of our lives. For health even at this age, for as long as it may last. For the relative ease of travel these days, compared to a hundred or more years ago. ¶ Updated my Now page on Sivers's site, as per his request. ¶ This is one...
I don’t remember when I first became aware of this book, though author’s name recognition definitely played a part, and I love the cover and the premise. Beware: sexist discrimination appropriate to the period; early dementia (potentially Alzheimer’s); crossdressing; Sapphic relationships (closed door); parent...
This one fully deserves a “OMG Ubuntu”, but meant more like “what on earth are you doing, Ubuntu?”. The font Ubuntu Regular has become thinner and therefore is much more difficult to read, apparently all in an effort to look “modern”. If it ain’t broke… Here’s what I would have done: kept Ubuntu Regular as it was...
A flow chart describing some steps and decisions done within curl when a HTTP URL is provided. For hostnames, protocol and port numbers. This flow chart ignores proxies, authentication considerations and use of unix domain sockets to keep things simpler. URL An initial step is of course to extract the hostname part...
A year and a half ago, I had the three beams of security: A well-paying job, an apartment, and a car. I didn't have savings, but I was content; living paycheck to paycheck doesn't seem all that bad when the checks cover your expenses. The car note and apartment rent were overpriced, but I only have to take care of...
Scientific American published a clock puzzle a couple of weeks ago that I finally got around to looking at today. It wasn’t hard, but I’m less interested in the solution than in a very small discrepancy I found. Finding discrepancies was a big part of my job, so it was nice to see that I still can.
Starting a new thing on this blog because I've been getting really into finding new music as a method of procrastination lately. I've gotten into so many genres and artists over the years, but I love how the world is so big that I'll never run out of new music to listen to. So here's who and what I've been listening...
Because if there was a point to all of this, it would be pointless to continue. Am I doing this right?
As President of Web Components, it’s my duty to publicly comment on every Web Component library and framework that exists. Today I’m taking a look at Quiet UI, a new source-available web component library soft-launched by Cory LaViska, the creator of Shoelace WebAwesome. You might be asking “another UI library? But...

I ran some different Google Search queries to look for backlinks to The New Leaf Journal. I found a few. For example, New Novel ‘Under the Neon Sun’ inspired by real conflict between Yakuza and Chinese Gangs published by K. Kjelsberg on Market Press Release. This is a November 18, 2024 press release for a book by a […]
I celebrate the quarter-century anniversary of the North American release of Pokémon Gold and Silver with the story of how I organically caught a shiny purple Drowzee in my first Gold run.
A non-exhaustive list of people who may not be able to favour physical media over streaming
BirchtreeIn the 6 years we’ve been making these TV+-on-TV-on-TV jokes, I haven’t seen any evidence that this has caused any actual pain for users. Maybe it’s out there and I’m just blind to it, but I just haven’t
Just a few years ago, the philosophy major seemed on the rise. Now, the data reveal a different picture. As Eric Schwitzgebel shares in the following guest post, the number of undergraduate degrees awarded in philosophy (and their share of the total undergraduate degrees awarded) has declined over the past few...
Hamilton Nolan writing at How Things Work: If you make a joke, they won’t get it. If you use sarcasm, they won’t detect it. If you exaggerate for effect, you will be taken literally, and if you try to be understated, you will be accused of a contemptible lack of urgency. If you make a […]
One last photo from the just-ended Osaka Kansai Expo 2025. A long exposure on Fujifilm Superia 400. 大阪・関西万博2025がちょうど終わったばかりだが、最後の写真を一枚。富士フイルム Superia 400で長時間露光した。
Acronyms are great, as they save unnecessary repetition, but bear in mind that assumption is a foolish thing when writing. Firstly, the definition of an acronym: An abbreviation formed by the initial letters of other words. We've all seen and used this form of abbreviation. They appear every day in life. ASAP - As...
Active Storage is a wonderful library for managing file uploads in Rails. But terms like blob and attachment are easy to mix up, and that confusion can remain even after you’ve been using Active Storage regularly. I’ve run into that myself. I’ve used Active Storage for a long time in several projects, without ever...
I have too many keyboards. But the real travesty of it all is that I have too many keycaps. And none of them are stored properly. I have a tote full of keycaps, none of them collected by set, just mixed together. What kind of monster does that? Apparently, that’s me. The thing is, I don’t know what to do about it....

October 2025. Brasov. Seven days, five cities, 3,568 calories worth of apple strudel. Romania is a gem, easy to negotiate, bar the painfully slow rail network. 2:34 hours on the train to Brasov (pop. 237k) in the centre of the country, your gateway to the lands of Vlad the Impaler and Count Dracula, neither of…...
