Week? Month? Some other, unspecified amount of time? I collect a lot of bookmarks but often don’t do anything with them after that. In an attempt to remedy this I’m going to start sharing interesting bookmarks on a somewhat regular basis. I am also going to attempt to collect them together in a useful way […]

This post was started in 2024, but as I attended the .NET Day Switzerland 2025 roughly weeks ago, I remembered, that I never actually finished and published it … until now. The conference was opened by the organizers with some general information about the conference… It’s Not Your Dad’s .NET Anymore …then the word...

Reviews and thoughts on various teas I've tried and formed opinions on. Covering assorted black teas, green teas, herbal teas, and masala chais.

A little experiment where I write a post with pen and paper, but I transcribed it as well, just for fun

Dear reader,I’m planning to leave WhatsApp at the end of this month, and switch fully to Signal, a much more private and ethical messaging app. The decision wasn’t easy, and it has taken me years of consideration, but it feels like the right thing to do. The enshittification of WhatsApp has reached a point I can’t...

One of my sporadic reviews

I confess: I do retro blog! People who are subscribed to my RSS feed—you rock, by the way, and I appreciate you—might have noticed the posts that date back weeks if not months. That must seem odd to people who set their creation dates when they write the post, but I have chosen a different route; I set my creation...

I read this very nice post from Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry’s PolicySphere newsletter (it comes with my recommendation and has a hidden RSS option) collecting remembrances of Charlie Kirk after he was assassinated while speaking at Utah State University on September 10, 2025. I second Mr. Gorby’s introduction. Josh...

Artemis, the calm web reader I maintain, has a few new features. Below is a summary of the features now available to all users. Also, I have started a Discord server for the project in which I can both answer questions and will potentially share some stories of the behind-the-scenes design and engineering that goes...

Bear with me. I think Charlie Kirk was bad, harmful, and indirectly responsible for suffering and death. I think it's good that he is no longer preaching his white supremacist message. I think it's good that he is no longer advocating against trans existence. I think it is good that he is no longer encouraging...

It had occurred to me that I haven't really solidified my position on coding with "AI" so I thought I would jot down some thoughts on the subject. Come to think of it... It's the exact opposite of... Hmmm... Wait, I already have written about it!

First Impressions: Aggressive, Compact, Ready to Work The Redragon WYVERN K689 PRO wastes no time making a statement. Right out of the box, this compact, full-sized mechanical keyboard is without feeling cramped, minimalist without looking cheap, and clearly built to punch above its price point. The matte black body...

Back in 2015 I gave a talk titled “Cocoa is the new Carbon: the Future of Apple’s Beloved Framework”, whose presentation has a slide that said “Cocoa should remain for backwards compatibility during 10 years at least, until 2025”.

Cultural institutions, having used Meta and Google products for "free" for the last decade, ask the legitimate question: "How do we have access to audiences so we can promote our events, without relying on Instagram / Facebook / YouTube / TikTok?".

Since the early days of this Manual, my goal has been the “slow web,” which here translates to being the last to cover a topic. Even so, I didn’t expect I’d ever write about something eight years late. Anyway — here we are. Let’s talk wireless earphones. I resisted them for two reasons. First, I […]

"To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance... To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple."

"Gran Consiglio" from the "Habiti d’huomeni et donne venetiane", published by Giacomo Franco, c. 1610.

There was some great news about Apple this week! What? No, not the iPhone thing. They made a phone that's only 5,5mm thin! Well except for the part of the phone which isn't 5,5mm thin of course. Let's not look at that part. But no, I'm talking about another device. Apparently there were games made and sold for the...

I’m coming up on 20 years of professional web development and I still don’t get it sometimes. I tend to measure myself or view work productivity through the lens of “How much code did I write?” and that does a great disservice to myself and what I do. There’s a lot more to the job: Checking email Scheduling calls...

It's Friday and I should be getting the couple of things that are on my plate, off of it. But its been a long week of fires and things and I just don't want to. Instead, here is a picture of a sunfower that I took yesterday evening while grilling …

I read the book with the same title last month but since then, almost everyday, I was missing its characters. Yesterday I decided to watch this movie to feel a little nostalgia. The storyline was almost similar to the book but many deeper moments from the book were missing. May be its impossible to give similar...

The poplars are fell'd... Ten poplar trees in Lichfield's delightful Beacon Park have been felled by the council, on the perfectly good grounds that they were shedding huge branches onto well frequented paths. But it is always sad to see them go. As Cowper put it, in a beautifully crafted poem lamenting the loss of...
