"Veduta della Fondamenta della Croce di Venetia" from the "Gran Teatro di Venezia", published by Domenico Lovisa, c. 1717.
Earlier this year was drier than normal here in Scotland. If I recall, there was a period of about two weeks where barely any rain fell. That’s not right, I thought. In May, I was curious how dry it was relative to previous years. I discovered that the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) publishes...

We saw My Chemical Romance at Soldier Field on Friday night. Still reeling from how good of a show it was. At one point the entire stage was on fire, and they had a guy in a fire suit run across.I found out afterwards that at least ten people I know were also there. Friends, coworkers, their friends. Never saw any...

Posts that have social-cards, or og-image attached get more views, and they look much better when shared. I'm creating a tool called md-social that was originally meant for posting my posts on Bluesky automatically, and registering the the post-id back in the markdown. But, I've since extended it to also generate...
I will be working on updating and aligning the segment names in show descriptions that I have entered in for each Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me! show to match the naming convention used by NPR and the show.

TL;DR: Market competition underlies the enterprise of standards. It creates the only functional test of designs and lets standards-based ecosystems route around single-vendor damage. Without competition, standards bodies have no purpose, and neither they, nor the ecosystems they support, can retain relevance. Apple...

A few days ago I was reading about sharks from Jurassic era. So I decided to watch this movie and the following part. But first one is already so disappointing that I am unsure to watch second one. There were many flawed bullshit in this movie such as using a aeroplane like submarines to go to 6000m deep. What a...

Here are my weeknotes from August 26 to September 1, 2025
You can always tell when I’ve been deep into a project when my feed reader stats go off-kilter:
I remember a conversation I had with my parents on approximately my 15th birthday. They asked me if I wanted to live on my own yet, to which I responded with an emphatic "no". They cautioned me to not be so confident in this answer. On the day of packing before college move in, their warning had already soundly...
I really oppose market capitalism and it’s up to its defenders to patch the bugs, for example by acquiescing to environmental regulation (like an ETS) and labor laws. And I’ve proposed banning the network effect and ending copyright. Of course, there are those who want to replace market capitalism entirely and I’m...
I have one of Those Uncles. You know. The kind who smugly inform you at every Thanksgiving that “if you’re not a conservative by age 40, you don’t have a brain.” Said Uncle has been consternated for decades that law school, a brief career in insurance litigation, and then starting my own business failed to turn me...

A theme park is a place designed to engender the impression that it came out of a work of fantasy or that it exists in a time capsule. Visitors expect to meet their favourite characters or witness familiar exhibits take a life of their own; a life that would otherwise not be given to them. It is a highly curated...
