This week, I dug through a box of papers that goes back almost 40 years and found a few gems I’ll be sharing here. First up is one of two crossword puzzles I made in fifth grade using Crossword Magic on our classroom’s Apple II-compatible Franklin Ace (probably the 1000 model shown in this video). Even though it...
Kodak Porta 400I probably took this on my Nikon F3 or F2, but I don't really remember. I photographed him in Graffiti Alley while shooting Polaroid Type 52 packfilm at the Black Lives Matter mural. This was a couple years ago, probably 2020.
It’s strange to realize my father is turning 80 next month. When I was born, he was 36—making me already eight years older than he was when he became a father of two. Though I’ve come to terms with the reality that I’m unlikely ever to experience being a father, there’s still, admittedly, a faint ember of longing....
Imagine receiving a package while going into your home and along the way you pass a recycle bin. You remember ordering the item and know it isn’t fragile. Jamming a key into a gap between cardboard flaps and dragging it to tear through as much of the tape as possible. You then Hulk-Rip™ the rest of the flaps open....
Have you noticed there are a lot of dumb little decisions to make? Have you also noticed that most of these decisions, while dumb, are not necessarily easy? There’s not an obvious answer. Sometimes there’s an obvious “I should” feeling, but I have a heavy distrust of shoulds. So I’ve been using this little matrix....
So, since I’ve started scrobbling my music (after I created the /now page), I’ve been on a bit of a music discovery kick. Tonight I was looking through country music playlists, and found one called “Classic Country”. Now, for me, Classic Country is Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Ernest...
Day 24: Write a review of your favorite album. What lyrics mean something special to you? Alright, let’s rip the band-aid off for this one. It’s by far the ‘Dumb and Dumber’ soundtrack. While this selection sounds dumb, give me a second. When I used to go to Tower Records, I didn’t have a ton of money, so finding...

Anyone who has worked closely with me, or followed on social media [, ], will have seen a post or comment to the effect of: Names and dates on docs. Every time. Don't forget. This is most often tacked onto design documents lacking inline attribution, and is phrased provocatively to make it sticky. Why do I care...
In this new video series, I talk to anybody who is interested to have a video call with me (so do contact me if you want!). The topics cover anything related to Emacs, technology, and life in general. More here: https://protesilaos.com/prot-asks/. Today I talk to Arni and learn about how Emacs is used as an...
we’ve all been there. a call or a coffee catch-up with a familiar face you haven't seen in a while. a former colleague, a previous manager, a teammate from a long finished project. you go through the usual pleasantries, trade updates on work and life, and reminisce about the "good old days." then, a pause. he look...
