When I first used the Internet, way back in the mid-90s, it wasn’t really a thing people thought about. It wasn’t a big deal, because most people didn’t even have it. If you wanted to use the Internet, if you even had a reason to do so, you had to go somewhere else to do it. The library or your school. It wasn’t...

A mission post by Lieutenant JG Sean Morgan, Lieutenant Weho Lape Sabril, Ensign Miles Archer Mission - Let's Do The Timeloop Again Sean arrived back at the science lab at quarter after. They'd all agreed to twenty minutes before reset, so 2329 was when they were supposed to meet, but Sean was antsy. There was a...

Recently, I was looking at rental properties for an upcoming move. After a couple of days it was obvious that Facebook marketplace had the largest network, and with it, the largest diversity of offers at the best prices. I haven’t had a Facebook account for nearly a decade, however I felt that I had to create a new...

Day 15, Are you an early or late adopter of technology? What makes you that way? I’d say I’m an early adopter for any technology that’s affordable. If it’s cheap, I’ve picked it up or deployed it in some fashion—often with mixed results. In fact, while not physical tech, when Docker first got on the scene, I was...

July 11, 2025 Well, this is just fucking GREAT. Measles is making a comeback. The U.S. is having its biggest outbreak in 33 years, with more than a thousand cases and counting, mostly because too many people decided vaccines are optional. “The measles milestone comes the same week that some of the nation's leading...

At the "Tree Bay" I startled a mob of emus Bin Chicken in Australia refers to the white ibis but here in Broken Hill we go bigger and have emu's. Emu's skip the bin and go straight for the dump. I was dumping some garden waste at what our city rubbish tip have signposted "Tree Bay". There was more than half a dozen...

(Found this on a spot to prepare articles. It dates from 2022, was for Forthright, but it's probably not online at the moment.) Why was Peter left in prison for seven or more days, Acts 12.1-11, when the Lord could have sprung him at any time? We could ask, of course, why Peter was allowed to be imprisoned to start...

A brief addition to the 50000 words I wrote earlier on the cloud: what is the European situation? Software Initially, companies and governments would buy licenses to software. You’d typically have a piece of software in your office, on one of your computers, to calculate payroll with. Most other computers would have...

It’s been a while since I’ve written about incense making; to be honest, things have slowed down a little. It’s been pretty hot in Chicago lately—I find that my sense of smell is dulled as the temperature and humidity rises. Unfortunately my apartment is very poorly insulated, so I’ve been burning, testing, and...

It's July. That means the tour is on. That's a good thing. I read this piece on watching the tour de france a few days ago, which does a good job of explaining the tour's appeal to those who might not get it. Bonus points for referencing Tim Krabbé's The Rider. I have faint memories of watching the occassional stage...

A twisty mind bender of a drama that will either entice you or turn you off. Dare to take the challenge?

Weeknote #5, staying alive was no jive. Some Links Worth Sharing Facebook is asking to use Meta AI on photos in your camera roll you haven’t yet shared - Come on. GTFO, Meta. A sitemap lists your site's pages, helping Google crawl it efficiently. It's especially useful for large sites or new sites with zero backlinks. This post shows how you can create one in your Rails site, how to add it to Google Search Console, and how to index new pages as soon as you publish them.

The asterisk after "Easy" is explained. This is how I'm pushing Web software changes for my little PHP projects these days...

For some time, I have gone down the Tea rabbit hole, to come out on the other end with a Gaiwan for Gongfu brewing, a Matcha set, I started importing tea from abroad, and have found that tea is now my drink of choice in the afternoons. This guide includes some of the very valuable information that the / tea /...

An update about what I have been up in June and July 2025: from the release of my Fediverse promo video in English, French, Italian and Czech, to speaking at #PubConf2025 in Amsterdam, and figuring out other ways to promote the Fediverse

Building a Simple Router with OpenBSD 2025-07-11 I’m hardly a “networking” or system admin expert. Even still, I’ve always been interested in the concept of building out my own home router with OpenBSD. It seemed so “hacky” and cool! The problem is that most of the tutorials I stumble across on the internet seem so...
