I don't have a quippy opening today. Today, I'm deeply upset! For those not in the know, I'm an author. I run a mailing list that also serves as a beta readers email list. I treat my beta readers very well, very well indeed. I give them total access to new books going to be released. I let them see the raw, Pantser,...
Day 10: What’s Your Relationship with Physical Labor? Do You Enjoy, Accept, or Avoid It? I really enjoy it. When I was younger, as I mentioned in a previous post, I touched on this a bit. But honestly, I lose myself in physical labor. It’s affirming. That’s not to say I don’t get anything from mental work; it’s just...

Recently, the owner opened up their Wiki for contributions from the community, and I'm pleased to say I've contributed my first guide for the self-hosted soulseek...
Over on my blog for The Linux Cast, I recently wrote about AntennaPod, my new favorite way to listen to podcasts. Not only is it awesome, but it’s open-source. When I was done writing that post, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about my favorite podcasts. I subscribe to about 150 podcasts, most of which...
While debugging a Rails app, sometimes it's useful to see the full list of callbacks that are set to run before, after, or around a controller action, in the exact sequence they will run. This is especially true in applications with a deep controller inheritance hierarchy or a heavy use of concerns with conditional...
As some of the work planned for Marginalia Search this year has been progressing a bit faster than anticipated, there was time to implement an unplanned change. This post details the implementation of a system for detecting when servers are online, to avoid serving dead links and improve data quality, and for...
I haven't been sketching for some years now, despite getting laptops and phones to draw on-the-go, their additional purposes for reading blogs, watching videos and getting to all the calendar and email notifications has muddied the urge to start sketching. One piece of software called Pico-8 has made it so I have...
