“Barely a month goes by without an AI laboratory declaring its latest model the smartest ever built. For anyone simply trying to keep up, or trying to pick a tool that drafts a decent e-mail, fixes broken code or turns a prompt into a usable image, the noise is deafening. This is the first instalment of TechCentral’s AI Barometer, a recurring, evidence-based snapshot of which AI models and platforms lead in the tasks people actually use them for. No vibes and no vendor...
The Valuable News weekly series is dedicated to provide summary about news, articles and other interesting stuff mostly but not always related to the UNIX/BSD/Linux systems. Whenever I stumble upon something worth mentioning on the Internet I just put it here. Today the amount information that we get using various information streams is at massive overload. Thus one needs to focus only on what is important without the need to grep(1) the Internet everyday. Hence the idea...
Last weekend, I took part in a panel discussion about making zines with Tero, H-P and Jukka at this year’s Finncon. We had a wonderful 45 minute discussion: many good things were said but a lot remained unsaid due to limited time so I wanted to share my thoughts on zines, especially from the perspective of a new zine maker. What’s a zine? When I tell people I make zines, the first question always is: what’s a zine? Zines, short for fanzine and parallel to magazine are a...
hustle hard culturedemeans us, shakesus to pulps of ourselves–fleshy, bony beggars of peace amidst turmoil.breaking our mindsbreaking our heartsbreaking our spiritsyet we run to theglimmer & glitz ofwhat we dream could be, not knowingthe dream…for us…was never meantto come true. The Experimental Scent Summit (ESS) is presented as part of an ongoing collaboration between Los Angeles-based The Institute for Art and Olfaction and Berlin-based Smell Lab. The Experimental Scent Summit (whose speakers and subjects of 2026 were presented in the official page) is an annual gathering designed to build community and learning in creative practices with scent. As a rule,
Just saw this over on Bubbles and had to reply because I so understand how this blogger feels! Gavin writes about his Photoshop frustrations in An Infuriating Goodbye to Photoshop. I had also been using Photoshop for years. I admit that way back around the mid-90s, when it was totally unaffordable for skint bloggers like me, I used a pirated version. I didn’t feel bad about this as I would never have paid for it anyway. Let’s just say that while I don’t pirate software...
I keep learning things while working with agentic LLM and wanted to keep growing as I'm introduced to new concepts and solutions. So I built a small system to capture them: a skill that notices when I'm learning something new and writes it down as a numbered markdown lesson, and a single-file server that renders the collection with tags, search, and related lessons. It's very simple to setup your own instance. Most of my lessons are also available online. #lessons #til...
Border security forces have always used bodies of water as a way to deter migrants but it is often more sinister than that. I have been debating whether it’s worth writing this because I keep thinking that this is common knowledge but then again it might not be. Migration is a topic that I care about very deeply so I am one of those people who actually goes and reads the reports from organisations who monitor and report on the struggles of migrants. It is for this reason...
They have too much data.#Contents Footnotes Every now and then I come across something that reminds me just how much data Meta has on us. A friend pointed me to this option in Meta Accounts Center called “Activity from other businesses”, which shows “activity sent from other businesses or organizations to show you relevant content.” Their main help page doesn’t even work in my region :/ I thought I’d already turned off all the data-farming settings, but apparently not. To...
The last couple of weeks have been hectic, but afforded me a few good opportunities to listen. There’s nothing like long flights, restless jet lagged afternoons, and protracted editing sessions to free up time to listen to music. I’ll generally listen to anything that William Parker and Matthew Shipp dream up and their most recent album, Synesthesia (2026), with Ivo Perelman on sax and Bobby Kapp on drums is a good one and a provocative follow up to their 2019 album...
Pagecord originated in AWS London simply because I had a grand’s worth of free credits. Once they'd been gobbled up, I moved it over to Hetzner where I got better value and I didn't have to rely on the big tech leviathan. I’ve been really happy with how things have worked out, but I've just moved Pagecord to its third home in three years. I thought I'd write about why, and how, I did the move. Pagecord is still hosted by Hetzner, but it's now running in the Falkenstein...
Pupdate The start of the month saw the raspberries coming out on the bushes in our garden, so Milo (in particular) got busy harvesting what he could reach (and barking at any birds that dared to come nearby). Miniature Dachshund Milo eating raspberries Max seems to be back to normal after his back trouble last month, and Milo has finished his chemo and had a scan that confirmed he’s still in remission :) Berlin Google’s I/O Connect rolled around again, and I went to Berlin...
Day Two in Nagoya. A wild boar is on the loose, attacking salarymen. However, no new kyujo to report. In Makushita, Asahifuji defeated Kaiseijo with a kotenage, video below courtesy of Abema’s Twitter feed. Calm and collected. His competition is getting stiff but Asahifuji is still racking up solid wins. He will face Otsuji tomorrow. … Continue reading Nagoya 2026: Day Two
The first things I noticed about 2029 First Avenue were the decorative lintels above the second floor windows. Attractively styled for window lintels on upper First Avenue, I figured this stubby holdout wedged beside two brick buildings between East 104th and 105th Streets must have been a former stable. I imagined that those roll-down window gates had once been two stable doors used by the drivers of the horses as they plied the streets of what used to be Italian East...
