Replied to I Do Not Recommend Google Hardware by Marius (マリウス) For its first year or so, the Nexus 5 was actually a likeable phone ... Then the hardware started giving up. The battery, which had been mediocre to begin with, became unreliable and the phone would report 40% charge one moment and shut off entirely the...
Replied to You Don't Need the DuckDuckGo noai Subdomain by Chris Wiegman (chriswiegman.com) There’s a lot of hype about accessing DuckDuckGo via its “noai” subdomain. It works, but there’s a better way. Instead of using a special domain to access DuckDuckGo, a method that works, but not in every situation, you can...
Replied to JulyReply 2026, a blog connecting month by Robert Birming (Robert Birming) June is done and Junited 2026 wrapped up. Now it's time for JulyReply, the third edition of this blog connecting event where bloggers reply to each other's posts throughout July. Last month, I participated in Robert Birming’s...
Quoted World Cup debrands mega stadiums by Matty Merritt (Morning Brew) It’s the first day of the World Cup, and in addition to sporting fresh new grass fields and extra tall beer cans, 11 stadiums across the US have scrubbed thousands of normal sponsors from their grounds. This expensive 'debranding' stems from...
Replied to [No title] by Rodrigo Ghedin (Manual do Usuário) Hot take: if you feel comfortable with Markdown, you don’t need an editor that displays the formatting. Any plain text editor will do. The rest is just fluff. Rodrigo Ghedin published a short “hot take” on markdown: “[I]f you feel comfortable with Markdown,...
I have not published “daily” Pook-Emu Bee links since June 23. But today is the start of a new month. Let us turn over a new leaf in July with the Pook-Emu Bee. I took this photograph in Brooklyn Bridge Park on the morning of July 1, 2026. It is difficult to see here, but there were pigeons and doves on the stone...
Favorited https://jonathanturley.org/2026/06/28/white-time-dutch-professor-argues-that-time-itself-is-racist/ by Jonathan Turley (Jonathan Turley) These authors largely cite each other with little attention to countervailing viewpoints. It becomes a closed, self-perpetuating system as academics invite one another to...
Liked Dear AI Companies: Stop the “Doom Trolling” by Cal Newport (Cal Newport) In my op-ed. I ask the leading AI labs to stop pretending they’re the reluctant stewards of an inevitable technology, and instead act like normal consumer product companies. This means that they should explain the benefits of their tools,...
Liked Shiki (Anime Review) by Cabbage (Cabbage Sorter) I had Shiki on hold since 2013 ... When I first watched it, I couldn't get past the hair, it was too much. It wasn't just the hairstyles though, I clearly remember feeling overwhelmed by a gazillion characters being introduced at a lightning pace and that was...
Liked Nagoya 2026: Shin-Makushita (新幕下) by hochiyama (Tachiai) This helped me, a 30-plus year sumo fan learn the concept of 'tatakiage / 叩き上げ'. A tatakiage is actually my favorite type of recruit, one who comes straight from middle school without any prior experience and is 'built from scratch' in the stable. I...
It has been five days since the last edition of Pook-Emu Bee links. While I ordinarily publish links in the morning and it is now the evening, I submit some late links today to keep the backlog under control. Today (June 23, 2026) was primary election day in New York City. I did not have a primary to vote in, but I...
Liked Daily News Stuff 18 June 2026 by Pixy Misa (ai.mee.nu) Amodei is every bit as much of a weasel as Sam Altman. And while Altman is a sociopath and a compulsive liar, Amodei is something much worse: He's whiny. I look forward to reading Pixy Misa’s Daily News Stuff posts (seven days a week), which feature links...
