Protesilaos

Protesilaos

I am a philosopher living in the mountains of Cyprus at a house I built myself which I affectionately call “the hut.” I spend my free time programming on GNU Emacs, writing essays on a wide range of life issues, and doing infrastructure work around my house. My background is diverse and reflects my intellectual curiosity as well as consistently high work ethic.

For this entry in the series, I have picked a poem from my own collection: https://protesilaos.com/poems. I usually do not explain what my poems mean or, rather, what I think they are about, because I do not want to bias the reader’s interpretation of them. The beauty of art is that it does not have to have one...
In this ~2.5-hour video, I talk with Ag Ibragimov about Emacs, Lisp programming, Large Language Models, social interactions and the use of language, as well as the importance of narratives and story-telling. Ag shares with me his enthusiasm about all things Emacs, including the fact that it is a “Lisp machine”, so...
Unlike my other entries in the “selfies” section of my website, today I am sharing a sketch of me by Ekaitz Zarraga, available under the Creative Commons Attribution license. Thanks to Ekaitz for sharing this with me and for granting me the permission to publish it!
I am the endurance in your long hikes the fortitude in all your commitments the sheer resilience in your cold showers the exuberance in each of your long days the star dust permeating every fibre of your being the unflinching devotion to your way of living the fountain of your inexhaustible creativity I am the...
TMR provides facilities for setting timers using a convenient notation. Lots of commands are available to operate on timers, while there also exists a tabulated view to display all timers in a nice grid. Package name (GNU ELPA): tmr Official manual: https://protesilaos.com/emacs/tmr Change log:...
In this ~2.5-hour video, I talk to Christian Tietze about a wide range of topics, from his indie and freelancing programming, to topics of practical philosophy, and ultimately to note-taking with the Zettelkasten method. I have known Christian from the Emacs community, having interacted with him on several issue...
This is a caricature of how I feel mechanical keyboard switches are being marketed these days. I do not mean to judge anybody and I am having a good time learning about all the options out there, while typing on my boring Cherry Black switches. Have fun! XGF Mixed Signal buttery and coarse switch XGF have done it...
In previous entries I explained how I have reworked the modus-themes to optionally work as the basis for other theme packages. The official documentation is in the manual of the Modus themes (my manuals are the only source of truth; blog posts—including this one—become outdated):...
For this entry, I have picked a song from the corpus of work of Nikolas Asimos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB4DSjbtrwU. It is about the personal struggle of a misfit who bears witness to the perceived misdeeds in their milieu yet is powerless to stop them. Nikolas Asimos was such a figure. A modern-day Cynic,...
[ This is a development note. Things might change before the release of modus-themes version 5.0.0 and ef-themes version 2.0.0. ] In previous entries, I outlined how my ef-themes will be built on top of my modus-themes and then how the modus-themes are partly redesigned to enable such an arrangement: Emacs: the next...
I have been doing a lot of work these days on my themes. The immediate goal is two-fold: (i) make the modus-themes more flexible so they can be used as a the basis for other theme packages and (ii) make the ef-themes the first project to benefit from this development. Having the Modus themes as a foundation gives us...
It is not ageing that bothers you but the lifestyle which leaves you regretful and bitter
