laze.net is where I write about things that interest me. Try not to be shocked at the level of innovation! The site's history goes all the way back to December of 1994 when I launched a personal home page on my college's web server. It was only the second student site on the server and would eventually go on to eclipse the college's main page in terms of traffic. It also drew the ire of a politician in Richmond because I linked to "The Butt Page."

I’ve been listening to podcasts for over 20 years (and have had a couple of my own in that time) and honestly, these days the format is beyond saturated. In one sense, there are a lot of high quality, very well produced podcasts, but there is so much sameness out there. I subscribed to 34 movie podcasts and they all...
So, remember last Weeknote when I said I changed mailing list providers? I just did it again. The one I used for the previous mailing had so many ads in it, it ruined the newsletter. I took a slightly nerdier route to get a new one set up that should look nice and clean, no ads. September’s been a busy month with...
Going through some things in my basement, I stumbled across these two beautiful envelopes that I believe were my mom’s, probably from the late-1950s/early-1960s. I’m not sure what the story behind these was, whether they were purchased or came as part of a record or record storage purchase, but I thought they were...
This morning I was walking the dog when a guy on a bicycle called out to me, “Training for anything?” and started pulling over to chat. I paused, because considering the context, this was an odd question. Did Miles and I look like we were practicing for a dog show? But then I thought, “I bet I’ve talked to this guy...
Hey. Hope y’all are doing well out there in blog/rss/email land. Some stuff broke with my Occasional Weeknote mailing list when I moved to Netlify, but I think it’s all fixed now. If you’re one of the few that got these emails before, this one should be the first one in the last couple of months that was sent. We...
Busy days around these parts as the summer starts its decline. Both cars failed inspection and getting them up to spec was a nice chunk of change. Our younger kiddo is starting high school next week, while our older one is moving into her apartment this weekend before starting her sophomore year of college. My...
This is a truly fantastic album cover: Is the guy on the left aiming to block the shot of the guy on the right? Or is he also aiming for the red ball, but has poor vision? What is the guy in the white suit (Isao, I assume) hoping is the outcome of this particular battle? Does “Three Cushion” mean something that I...
Happy 150th birthday (yesterday) to my great-grandfather Andrew. He was born in Poland 99 years before I was born and died here in the US 20 years before I came into the world. He seems like he would have been an interesting guy to know. Look at that picture! Interestingly, that shot was taken on the farm he...
OK, so again a month has passed between Weeknotes. This time I’ve been spending time moving my site because, hey, it’s been a couple of years and what’s laze.net without a periodic server move? I wrote a bit about it on the site already, but I thought I’d comment a little more about the process here. Since I was...
About three weeks ago, a neighbor down the street posted to a local group that she found an orange cat laying on her porch. She’d brought him in for the night, but was looking for his person. The next day, I was outside chatting with my next-door neighbor when a woman drove by asking if we’d seen two loose cats. I...
If you’re reading this, you’re seeing laze.net at its new home. And pretty much nothing should look any different. Any previous URLs should either be the same or automatically redirect. Old functionality is still there. Some things on the maintenance side have gotten easier for me (after struggling a bit with the...
