Eric Thompson

Hi, I’m Eric or @cyanbane, I have been writing on the internet since before the “internet” When I was 12, I started my first BBS and started interacting with others on what would eventually become the web today. Door games, hacking and phreaking texts, warez, gamez, and ASCII Art were fantastic and hooked me from a young age. I eventually took up Visual Basic 6 to create a Dungeons & Dragons character generator, and here I am 30 years later, still loving coding. I am a coder by trade and have had this blog for over two decades. It has evolved over time and interests, and I have found myself multiple times just canning all of it and going back and starting it fresh. The site you are viewing now is probably about my 30th iteration, and it is slowly coming up on it's 25th anniversary. Welcome to it.

Eldara is an odd game. I tried to play Melvor Idle at one point ( still on my Idle game kick ) and I just didn't get it. Eldara is a better game with a better skin, but still the same underpinnings and I like it a bunch. I don't know what this says about me. One of the my favorite comments ever about a game is this...
I was very excited for Path of the Old Gods to come out, I played the demo and loved it. I actually loved it so much that when it was released, I didn't use my old demo save to forward into the new game. Like most Idle games the beginning stages of the game look staggering; I don't know how I will ever reach that...
Around the mid 90s, my dad used to sit in his chair in the mornings and read the Atlanta Journal and Constitution and we always had a copy of the Atlanta Business Chronicle downstairs next to some old Campmor paper catalogs in our bathroom that was the "community bathroom" in our house growing up. He would sit in...
Path of the Idle: Old Gods Rising was released in full. I had a whole post about the beta for the game, but it seems to have been lost in my drafts. The beta was out for about 3 months on Steam and was genuinely the first idle game beta since DesktopHeroes that I really had fun keeping in the corner of my screen....
This is simply amazing. Very strong Pink Floyd vibes for me. I feel like Zimmer has stepped out of the shadow of John Williams and may now be the premiere movie soundtrack guy. There are some parts that feel like something Williams would do and then there are other parts that feel like it stepped out of Year Zero /...
Finally, in this post, we put our money where our mouth is. We dragged a 2016 enterprise relic out of the closet — NAY, out of the grave, a single Intel Xeon running on agonizingly slow DDR3 RAM with absolutely no GPU to speak of — and forced it to run a cutting-edge, 26-billion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts...
I don't think it is very hard to predict the exponential rise of INT in large LLMs in the near future, but what about on prem local models and their rise? Every day I am seeing reports of people able to run decent models on their own M4 or dual card windows rigs. Models up to 27B on airplanes, when does this become...
We finished Season 2 for Fallout last week. SPOILERS ahead, don’t read if you care.—-------------------------------------------------------------Season 2 was pretty solid. I think we were a few episodes in before my wife asked about a specific character arc and I told her I didn't have an answer because they don’t...
A 16-year-old with no credentials and no capital could just do things. The world of bits offered the freedom to build without being drowned in arbitrary constraints, in a way that didn’t require assembling vast capital or prestige or connections, where your creativity and work could speak for itself, and you had...
A few weeks ago when the war began me and a bunch of friends started to discuss Helium and the need for it in Medical MRI imaging. The Strait of Hormuz was the only pass through for a good bit of it. The friend's dad worked in the radiation medical industry, and I asked him about it, and we did a little research and...
I am still playing a ton of Diablo IV in my free time. We are currently in a shortened season ( only 12 weeks ) and the new season starts in about 3 weeks with the new Expansion and class rework. There will be tons to write about then, however I am still enthralled with all these small little Idle games on Steam...
So a few weeks ago I started running Desktop Heroes on a secondary PC I had (a three-generation-old gaming PC) because I snagged it for a pittance and wanted to see what all the fuss was about with those types of games. I usually don’t get idle games. I always thought people who bought “Football Manager” games...
