Invisible Parade

Alex Onsager

My name is Alex. I grew up near Boulder, CO and spent most of my childhood reading books, playing music, and playing video games. I learned programming by making bad games for my TI-83 calculator. The first things I published online were bad flash websites. In college I studied programming and human-computer interaction. A team of classmates and I made a few apps on Facebook, which eventually turned into a startup. This was the first time I made something that was used by a large number of people. It became my introduction to making real products that have users and make money. I have been working at a mobile game company in Japan since 2010. Because my day-job doesn't currently involve much programming, I like to work on fun projects on the side that let me build things directly. Part of the reason I maintain this blog is the hope that it will help me make more connections online. Please feel free to get in touch! It would make me very happy.

This is an experimental IME that lets you type a mix of English and Japanese without switching between the two. It should be smart enough to identify the language of substrings. kyouhagoogledekensaku → 今日はgoogleで検索 Unfortunately I haven’t been able to test it because it’s developed primarily for Windows and the Mac...
Overall, it’s an enormous leap in efficiency and precision. It’s a personal assistant, a second brain, a ChatGPT of your own life. You just have to will yourself to use it. After 19 years of performing the unlock-phone/open-app/search routine, you’ll need some time to acclimate. But once you’re used to it, you see...
My house has the following features: Solar panels on the roof. These were heavily subsidized and on a 10-year lease, so excess electricity is taken by the power company for the first 10 years. After that, I can export it for profit (although I expect prices to keep falling). An ENE-FARM, a fuel cell that uses...
This ebook by Daina Chiba is an excellent, thorough resource for learning Riichi mahjong. It’s hard to find such good material in English. You need a pretty strong understanding of the fundamentals to follow along with many of the sections, so this will probably become something that I revisit many times as I...
Pets A while ago we got a Betta, and we recently adopted a hamster as well. The whole family loves them. Mahjong I’ve started learning Mahjong, hoping eventually to be able to play with my dad friends. I’m playing mainly on Mahjong Soul and I’m slowly climbing the ladder. Swimming Our pool was closed for summer...
A number of my dad friends play Mahjong, so I figured this would be a good time to finally take the time to learn to play. I’ve been able to use AI tools in a way that makes learning extremely efficient (at least I think so). First, I opened a session with Claude and asked it to talk me through the rules and basic...
My primary email address is hosted on Gmail, and I have used it for basically everything since Gmail was first launched in 2004. I access my email via IMAP and Gmail’s spam filter is great, so I haven’t ever had issues with the service. At the same time I do also want a more curated space for email that I control,...
I just started using Harper via an Obsidian plugin and so far it is working great. It is open source and runs locally with no external dependencies, doing everything it needs to and nothing else.

I sure wish I could commit to writing with pen and paper. There are very compelling arguments for why one should write by hand. It’s good for your brain! Science proves it! I’ve been in meetings with people who enter the room with a pen and notebook. They seem so much more attentive and engaged than the people...
I know you want to use AI as an escape. It is so tempting. You get to sit in your bubble and imagine everything and see it come to life and your agent buddy will keep cheering you on while you get nothing done with your life. And I think that’s the biggest danger of AI. You convince yourself that you are doing...
There is the appealing idea that AI-assisted programming means better tools which lets us build more ambitious software. That is certainly true at the level of the individual and without doubt a developer with an agent will be dramatically more capable of changing a codebase. But large software projects have never...
